Overdose on culture in Porec with the numerous museums, galleries and historical monuments in and around the town.
Wander the narrow streets of the ancient 'old town' armed with just a brochure from the tourist office and a camera to capture the magic.
Guided tours are a more formal way to make sure that you're able to tick off the notable sights from your 'to do' list without missing any of the attractions in and around the town.
Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Euphrasius Basilica has to be the focal point of any sightseeing trip. Rebuilt in the 6th century during the time of the Byzantine Empire, a lasting testament to the craftsmanship of ancient builders.
Decumanus street's ancient market is an ideal place to shop for local arts and handicrafts. The beautiful Pentagonal Tower is also located here.
The remains of the temple of Neptune - the classical God of the Sea - are located in the western part of Marafor Square.
A few houses from the Romanesque period and beautiful Venetian Gothic palaces have been preserved, the Dieta Istriana hall, originally a Gothic Franciscan church built in the 13th century, was remodeled in the 18th century in the Baroque style.
After veiwing the sights of the old town, and if you've managed to explore all the beach options, then why not check out on the many excursions available from Porec:
For petrol-heads of all ages, visit the
race track
, two powerbands of single seat karts, family and kiddie-karts, off-roading and for all things motor-sport.
Baredine Cave
is fairly close, and well worth a visit.
Take the wine road!
Go inland from Porec to the hill villages considered reminiscant of a bygone Tuscany.
Wine tours to villages each boasting wine cellars and local produce; cheeses and hams in particular, and of course the mysterious truffle.
Purchases of local fare is greatly encouraged!
But don't just take our word for it, this is what G Adventures have to say about their Istrian truffle tour:
Croatia Truffle Festival
Prized by epicureans for their flavour and scarcity, the elusive truffle is the rock star of the fungus world. And nobody celebrates this most exalted of tubers quite like Croatia, home to the annual Truffle Days Festival. Beginning on the island of Cres, our adventure here will introduce you to the idyllic seaside communities of Croatias Adriatic Coast and let you partake in a genuine truffle hunt with a professional tartufalo before delivering you to the culinary tuberpalooza itself in Livade. Dont forget to pack your appetite. (In fact, pack a spare, just in case.)
Travel to Venice, one of the most beautiful cities of the world by the fastest boat on Adriatic, with
Venezia lines.
Approximately two and a half hours for the crossing.
Daily sailings during the high summer months of July and August, less frequently in spring and autumn, (and no service in the winter months) this can be done as a day-trip or part of a travel itinary through the Adriatic.
All the towns of Istria from Trieste around the peninsula to the Opatija Riviera and Rijeka are easily reached making for lots of opportunities to explore farther afield.
Widening the range of excursions will bring the Plitvice Lakes, a woody mountainous region with a string of 16 lakes interconnected by streams and waterfalls.
The Brijuni archipelago; an attractive group of islands just off the coast near Pula and Rovinj.
In neighbouring Slovenia, take the underground train into Postojna Cave and visit the breathtaking Predjama Castle, then perhaps onto Lake Bled.
Go cruising in luxury sailing boats or vintage sailing ships along the Istrian coast and Northern shores of the Adriatic islands or further south to the Dalmatian coast, and even onto Greece!
Porec, not just a great resort for a holiday at the sea, but a good centre for getting out and about Istria and beyond!
