Quaint, picturesque, quirky – Piran is just delightful!

Piran, travel, holiday, Istria, beaches.Positioned at the tip of the Piran peninsula, on a narrow headland, means that space is at a premium.

This has not allowed overdevelopment which has helped in preserving the medieval layout with narrow streets and compact houses.

Essentially traffic-free, apart from local services – a visitors car-park is just outside the town’s entrance – it’s easy to wander and take in the sights.

Piran, tartini sq, travel, holiday, Istria, beaches. The focal point of the town has to be the harbour and the adjacent main square ‘Tartini Square’ venue to impromptu music and theatre as the sun goes down.

Points of interest in Piran:

Tartinijev trg. the beautiful oval-shaped main square, with a statue of the famous violinist Giuseppe Tartini. This was once the original inner harbour, but after it silted up it was filled in.

Piran, venetian house, travel, holiday, Istria, beaches. Venetian House. The red building on Tartini Square is a fantastic example of gothic Venetian architecture and the oldest building on the square. Built by a rich Venetian merchant to house his mistress, spot the inscription between the upper windows: it says ‘Lassa pur dir’, or ‘let them talk’ .... !

Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum, Exhibits to illustrate the story of Piran's maritime history and culture.

Church of St. George (Cerkev sv. Jurija). Catholic interior design – has to be seen! Nice view of the town, harbour and marina, and across the bay to Croatia from the bell-tower.

Watch the Sunset. Preferably from a bar on the waterfront with an aperitivo in hand.

Barkalotos Boat day-trips. Glass-bottomed boat trip

Climb the city walls.
To accommodate the expansion of the town over time, three layers of walls have been built, dating from roman times through to the 16th century.
Seven town gates, former entrances through the town walls, are preserved.
Your mission, should you choose to accept; to find and record the names of each gate.
Unfortunately, no prizes for this.

Walk along the coastal path around the headland to Fiesa.
A small town on the other side of the headland – with a small bathing area.

Museum of underwater activities is one of nine small museums in Piran, tracing
the developement of underwater activities with special emphasis on the
Austro-Hungarian Monarchy,
The Kingdom of Yugoslavia,
The Kingdom of Italy,
The Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia
and modern Slovenia.

Eating out

As can be imagined, many of Piran's restaurants are located on the waterfront, each predominately al-fresco to take in the glorious views .

Restaurants away from the waterfront tend to be a bit cheaper. Italian flavour shines through with pizzerias and gelato shops.

Fontana. Seafood on the terrace.

Gostilnica. Seafood dishes.

Neptun. A small restaurant just one street back from the harbour. Specializes in seafood.

Pavel. Waterfront setting, indoor and outdoor seating. Serves a variety of meat and fish dishes.

Pizzeria Batan. Pizzeria located by the inner harbour

Pri Mari. Overlooking the small beach and sea. Specializes in seafood.

Restaurant Miralonda, at the Hotel Piran. Varied menu with seating along the waterfront

Restaurant Riva. Near the headland.

Tri Vdove. Waterfront restaurant with a mix of meat and fish dishes.

Waterfront Bars with live music add to the mix well into the small hours.

Beaches

Piran, travel, holiday, Istria, beaches. There is a small sandy beach near the town entrance. Although not a Blue Flag beach, adjoining beaches and marinas are, and with the beautifully clear blue water, swimming is certainly possible from the promenade along the whole waterfront.

Piran, travel, holiday, Istria, diving in, beaches. As swimming here is directly from the town, it’s not suitable for nudists, although as with all beaches in Istria, it’s perfectly allowable to be topless .

Diving School.

The idyllic conditions of the northern Adriatic - warm, clear waters - make underwater exploration something that just has to be done.
Do it here!

A gentler alternative is the glass-bottomed boat trip from the harbour.
