Novigrad loosely translated from Croatian means ‘New Town’, which conjures up misleading images of the concrete developments so popular in the 1950s...

Novigrad, travel, holiday, beach, party, sea-view, Istria, beaches, adriatic, mediterranean, ATP tennis, truffles, tartufi. These images are misleading as the ‘old town’ is just that – old, and as with Izola in Slovenia, it was initially a small island, settled by Romans and witnessing the same ebb and flow of invaders, empires and influences as the neighbouring towns of Istria and beyond.

The name may stem from the town being re-developed in the 1700s as this was when the island was joined to the mainland of the Istrian peninsula.

Novigrad, travel, holiday, beach, party, sea-view, Istria, beaches, adriatic, mediterranean, ATP tennis, truffles, tartufi.

Taking in the sights of the medieval town centre, imposing villas from previous eras, ancient ruins of the town’s fortifications, we can only note that the term ‘new’ is relative!

Just a short trip along the coast southwards from Umag finds the town situated on the north side of the bay of the Mirna River.

The geography of the area, the river Mirna flowing into the Adriatic, and the joining of the island to the mainland, all combine to create a sheltered haven from adverse weather on the important maritime trading routes of the northern Adriatic.

From a small fishing village, through being a safe haven,
today’s Novigrad has built on this tradition with a modern Marina complex: Up to date facilities incude:

    365 berths

    • 50 dry berths.

    • max. length: 40.00 – max. draught: 4.00

    • travel-lift for boats up to 80 tons to 80 tons

    • maintenance or repairs.

    • proximity to the old town

Of interest in the town and around the area:

Continuing with the nautical theme, Novigrad houses a tribute to the K.u.K (kaiserlich und koniglich, Imperial and Royal,) navy.

Complete with diagrams, plans, photos, maps, navigational instruments, weaponry and models of the times before 1918 when the Croatian coast and its ports were of vital importance to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Belvedere

- the only recorded loggia or portico in Istria adjacent to the sea. It is thought to be dated to the 16th century and built on the remains of the town walls.

Lapidarium Museum.

Stone relics housed in the Lapidarium Museum are findings from the numerous sites of historical interest in the area reflecting the length of time over which the coast of Istria has been inhabited, from pre-history to today.

Istria has 2387 sunny hours per year and then, as now, was valued for its climate allowing fishing and agriculture to develop, most famously renowned for producing olive oil and truffles, still highly valued today...

.... but don't just take our word for it, this is what G Adventures have to say:

Croatia Truffle Festival

Prized by epicureans for their flavour and scarcity, the elusive truffle is the rock star of the fungus world. And nobody celebrates this most exalted of tubers quite like Croatia, home to the annual Truffle Days Festival. Beginning on the island of Cres, our adventure here will introduce you to the idyllic seaside communities of Croatias Adriatic Coast and let you partake in a genuine truffle hunt with a professional tartufalo before delivering you to the culinary tuberpalooza itself in Livade. Dont forget to pack your appetite. (In fact, pack a spare, just in case.)

Rigo Palace.

The Rigos were an aristocratic family, their town house being the Rigo Palace.
This now houses a contemporary arts gallery.

Their country estate was built on the Karpinjan peninsula on the outskirts of Novigrad in 1750, commissioned by Count Carlo Rigo in the Late Baroque style.

Novigrad Town Walls.

The old town was once entirely surrounded by the town walls, built as fortification against attack. These were rebuilt at various times in history, namely in the Roman and Venetian periods. Only traces of these remain.

Villa / Cloister in Dajla

Along the coast at Dajla is a now derelict building, but of note for its long and eventful history.

With gardens leading to the waters edge, the estate is a rare example of the Neo-classicist style on the whole of the Adriatic coast.

    Roman – a country estate

5th Century – turned into cloisters by Greek monks

9th Century – now run by the Benedictines

Private Villa remodelled into its current French Neo-classicist configurment in 1839.

1860 - Returns to the Benedictines, used for education.

1948 – Confiscated by the state, run as a nursing home.

    1989 – Closed.

    Currently derelict.
